Emergency Contraceptive Pill (Morning After Pill)

If you've had unprotected sex, or think your contraception may have failed, the Emergency Contraceptive Pill (ECP) can help prevent pregnancy. Time matters, the sooner you act, the more effective it is.

How the ECP works

The ECP is a single tablet that works primarily by delaying or preventing ovulation, the release of an egg from the ovaries. It may also make it harder for sperm to reach an egg, and can affect the lining of the uterus.

It does not end an existing pregnancy. The ECP should not be confused with the abortion pill, which is a different medication entirely.

How soon does it need to be taken?

The ECP is most effective when taken as soon as possible after unprotected sex:

• Within 24 hours: highly effective

• Within 48 hours: effective

• Within 72 hours (3 days): still effective, though slightly less so

• After 72 hours: not recommended and unlikely to prevent pregnancy

Do not wait to see if your period arrives before taking the ECP. The sooner you take it, the better.

Funding for under-25s

If you are 25 years old or younger and a New Zealand resident, the ECP consultation and medication are fully funded, there is no cost to you*. A brief consultation with our pharmacist is still required.

What to expect at the pharmacy

Our pharmacist will have a brief, private conversation with you to make sure the ECP is appropriate for your situation. The consultation is confidential. You do not need to make an appointment, simply drop in during our opening hours.

You will be asked a few simple questions, including when you had unprotected sex and the date of your last period. This takes only a few minutes.

Things to know

• You do not need to be over 16 to access the ECP at a pharmacy

• The consultation is completely confidential

• Some people experience mild nausea after taking the ECP — if you vomit within two hours of taking it, contact us as you may need a repeat dose

• The ECP is not a regular contraceptive method and is not intended for ongoing use

• It does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
