What is NAC?

N-acetylcysteine, commonly known as NAC, is a supplement form of the amino acid cysteine. Your body uses cysteine to produce glutathione, one of the most important antioxidants in the human body, produced inside your cells and involved in almost every aspect of cellular protection and repair.

Glutathione plays a central role in:

  • Protecting cells from oxidative damage caused by free radicals

  • Supporting the liver's natural detoxification pathways

  • Regulating immune function and the body's inflammatory response

  • Maintaining respiratory health by thinning and clearing mucus

  • Protecting brain cells and supporting neurological function

  • Blood sugar regulation and insulin sensitivity

Because glutathione breaks down rapidly in the digestive tract when taken directly as a supplement, NAC is widely considered the most effective way to raise glutathione levels. It supplies the key building block the body needs to produce it naturally and sustainably.

NAC has a well-established evidence base built over decades of clinical and scientific research. It is used in conventional medicine as a treatment for paracetamol overdose and as a mucolytic in respiratory conditions, and has an extensive and growing body of research across liver health, mental health, metabolic conditions, and immune support.

What makes Augmented NAC different?

Standard NAC supplements are effective, but Augmented NAC takes the formulation further. Developed in Italy using a proprietary production process, each capsule is manufactured to enhance the natural properties of the NAC molecule, improving its antioxidant, detoxifying, and protective capabilities compared to standard NAC.

Laboratory testing has confirmed that Augmented NAC:

  • Reduces vitamin C oxidation to just 2% within 24 hours, compared to 14% with standard NAC, meaning your body retains significantly more usable vitamin C

  • Minimises glutathione degradation to 61% within 24 hours, compared to 99% loss with standard NAC, delivering a more sustained antioxidant defence

  • Works synergistically with other supplements and vitamins, enhancing rather than competing with their effects

The result is a supplement that delivers the full benefits of NAC at a lower dose. At 200mg per capsule, Augmented NAC requires a fraction of the dose of standard NAC products, which typically start at 600mg. The lower dose also makes it considerably better tolerated by people with sensitivities to conventional NAC.

Each box contains 90 vegan capsules, housed in dark glass bottles with aluminium caps. packaging to preserve potency. Gluten-free, lactose-free, and vegan friendly.

Why Mark recommends Augmented NAC

Mark Webster has been recommending NAC to patients for years as part of his integrative medicine practice. As the naturopathic pharmacist behind Stay Well, and one of New Zealand's most credentialled integrative health practitioners, he chose Augmented NAC as his preferred formulation after researching the available options, and became New Zealand distributor because he couldn't find it reliably available here.

In his consultation practice, Mark commonly incorporates NAC as part of a broader protocol for patients managing:

  • Liver health and detoxification support

  • Respiratory conditions, including chronic mucus, airway inflammation, and reduced lung function

  • Gut health and digestive recovery, particularly following antibiotic use

  • General antioxidant and cellular protection, especially for people under high physical, chemical, or environmental stress

  • Immune resilience and recovery

  • Metabolic and blood sugar support

  • Mental health, particularly anxiety and obsessive-compulsive patterns, where NAC has emerging clinical evidence

If you're unsure whether Augmented NAC is right for you, Mark is available for a conversation at the pharmacy counter, or you can book a paid consultation for more detailed individual advice.

Dosage and how to take it

The recommended dosage is 2 to 3 capsules per day. Take with food and plenty of water, particularly if you have a sensitive stomach.

Augmented NAC works well alongside other supplements and can enhance their effects. However, if you are on anticoagulant, blood-thinning, or other prescription medications, please speak to a healthcare professional before starting. NAC can improve your blood sugar levels, so if you’re diabetic, ensure you monitor your blood glucose more closely.

The capsule can be opened and the powder mixed with yogurt, juice, or water if preferred.

A note on odour: NAC naturally contains sulphur compounds, which produce a strong smell similar to eggs. This is completely normal and does not indicate a problem with the product. If the smell is bothersome, leaving the bottle open for a short period will reduce it.

This product is a dietary supplement. It is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Please consult a healthcare professional if you have a specific health condition or are taking prescription medication.
