Compression Stockings
& Travel Socks
Properly fitted compression stockings are one of the most effective, non-invasive treatments available for a range of venous and circulation conditions. At Stay Well Pharmacy, our trained staff provide professional compression stocking and travel sock fitting for men and women.
Making an appointment is recommended, please call 03 349 8785. Compression stockings/socks are best fitted first thing in the morning, before your legs begin to swell.

What compression stockings do
Compression stockings apply graduated pressure to your legs, with the greatest pressure at the ankle, reducing gradually up the leg. This helps the veins push blood back up toward the heart more efficiently, reducing pooling, swelling, and discomfort.
Medical evidence strongly supports compression therapy for a range of venous and lymphatic conditions, including:
Varicose veins
Venous insufficiency, where the veins struggle to return blood to the heart
Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) prevention, particularly after surgery or during long periods of immobility
Oedema (swelling) in the legs and ankles, including during pregnancy
Post-thrombotic syndrome
Lymphoedema
Tired, aching, or heavy legs, particularly in people who stand for long periods
Travel socks
Long-haul flights and extended travel create conditions where DVT risk is elevated. Sitting still for hours reduces blood flow in the legs, and cabin pressure changes can increase swelling. Travel compression socks are specifically designed to manage this, applying graduated pressure to keep blood moving during extended periods of sitting.
If you're travelling for four hours or more, especially if you have any history of DVT, varicose veins, or circulatory issues, travel socks are worth considering.
Why professional fitting matters
Compression stockings come in a range of compression classes and sizes, and the wrong fit can be not only ineffective but potentially harmful. A compression garment that is too tight, too loose, or the wrong length for your leg measurements will not provide therapeutic benefit, and may restrict circulation rather than support it.
Our trained staff will take accurate measurements of your legs and recommend the appropriate product for your condition, activity level, and comfort requirements. We also advise on how to put on and remove compression stockings correctly, and whether any donning aids might be helpful.
Timing your fitting
We strongly recommend coming in for your fitting first thing in the morning. Legs are at their least swollen early in the day, which means your measurements will be most accurate and the stockings will fit correctly throughout the day as swelling develops. Arriving later in the day when legs are already swollen results in a measurement that may be too large for morning use.
